Cut & Craft, York

JMDA were approached to dramatically transform and oversee all design aspects of the newly acquired St Sampson Square site for owners Oscar & Osman, who are also proprietors of the hugely successful Lucia’s restaurants in Yorkshire, and deliver a unique venue for the county’s renowned capital. JMDA embraced this local project with their usual passion and a distinct pride to be working on the doorstep of their York office to create a state-of-the-art bar and restaurant.

The site underwent complex space planning and architectural design to make way for a statement circular bar encased in bespoke rich blue ‘fishtail’ tiles and a hand painted ceiling detail of a design based on the Yorkshire Rose. The central circular seating ripples out from the bar crating a unique informal bar / dining area. Further design features such as an open plan kitchen were implemented to create theatre and a feature ‘industrial’ steel staircase gives access to what one Trip Advisor reviewer has labelled ‘the best toilets in York’.
York, steeped in history and famously a pivotal player in the Wars of The Roses, drove the concept and design. The symbol of the rose can be seen throughout the stylish interior which also features brushed brass details set against rich walnut stained timberwork. A fresh and bold colour palette has moved the space forward and created an inviting ambience any time of the day.
